Is botox the next step in men’s quest for good looks

In these image-conscious times it’s a well known fact that men are fast catching up with women when it comes to spending time and effort on their appearance. The male grooming industry has grown by 800 per cent in the last seven years and men are a lot less afraid of admitting that they use cosmetics regularly.

Considering these recent changes in a lot of men’s attitudes to their looks, it shouldn’t really be surprising that things are now progressing to the next level. Men are not only using more beauty products and spending a lot more time and money on their looks but more and more men are choosing to take the quick route to a younger look and opting for Botox.

This trend for ‘boytox’ started in the United States but is now catching on in the UK too as an increasing number of men decide that they just don’t want to wait for all the lotions and potions to take effect when there is an instantaneous solution available. The only problem is, Botox is a poisonous substance. It literally freezes the muscles in your face so you physically can’t move them even if you wanted to. Sure it gets rid of the wrinkles on your forehead but it means you can’t frown. Or raise your eyebrows. Or really show any expression at all. Basically, after a few treatments you could end up looking like one of those creepy dolls that ventriloquists use.

It might be a quick answer to losing the wrinkles and looking younger, but surely a preferable method would just be to treat your skin properly and look after yourself, so that you can look your best without feeling the need to inject poison into your face. Sure, the recent boom in men wanting to look good might leave many looking for a quick solution but there are other easier ways. The increase in sales of male grooming products means there is more choice than ever, with brands like Lab Series and Dermalogica making all sorts of creams and moisturisers to help smooth out skin and leave you looking younger. Kiehls also do a big range of facial creams for eyes and wrinkles that are an alternative, much less dangerous way to look younger.

Michael Jackson may be getting more cosmetic surgery but is the trend over for everyone else?

Michael Jackson is apparently planning to revamp his image with even more plastic surgery in preparation for his big comeback this summer. The popstar, who is due to start a residency of 50 dates at London’s O2 Arena in July, has apparently been in consultation with a number of top surgeons and cosmetologists to work out his latest new look.

It’s not as if the international star hasn’t had plenty of surgery already, but it’s not hugely surprising to hear that he’s planning to go under the knife again. It’s one of the things he’s become most famous for after all. It would seem, though, that for the immediate future at least he will remain in the minority. The slightly worrying trend towards a nip/tuck culture where people can just pop in for a nose job or breast enlargement and no one bats an eyelid, appears to be coming to an end.

It could just be the recession meaning people don’t have the money to spare for expensive procedures, or it could be that people are starting to listen to the ever increasing list of horror stories related to cosmetic surgery. Whatever the reason, the fact remains that the number of cosmetic operations performed in the final three months of last year had dropped by at least 25 per cent.

This might be bad news for cosmetic surgeons but it’s surely great news for the rest of the beauty industry. Without the option to just get your body issues ‘fixed’ by going under the knife, people trying to retain their youthful looks are having to look elsewhere for an answer. And the only other answer is to always take proper care of yourself, your body and your skin.

Specialist cosmetic companies like NV Perricone and Elemis produce a huge selection of creams and moisturisers specifically designed to target problem areas and deal with common problems. She was glimmering, glamorous, glossy like the pages in Vogue. She had the type of beauty that shone and struck everyone in her path, but it didn’t appeal to Sophie’s analytical eye. It was too effortful. So unnatural it made Sophie cringe. Models needed a type of beauty that wasn’t pretty, exactly but somehow made you stop and think, “That chick’s a model.”
The girl standing in front of Sophie didn’t have it. She thought she did; hell, she probably came up to Sophie Ferraris thinking she had it in the bag. Today, Cappaport Academy, tomorrow, Dolce and Gabbana show in Milan. “Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but no, you don’t have it, and you never will”, Sophie desperately wanted to say. But she couldn’t. The words simply refused to escape her mouth.
Instead, she smiled sweetly up at the girl, who was twirling her glossy blonde hair nervously.
“I don’t think you’re quite what my mother is looking for right now. I’m sorry. You’re very pretty, though!” Sophie gushed apologetically, a false smile hovering on her lips the entire time. The girl sighed dejectedly and rubbed her temples.
“Why? I mean, what’s wrong with me?” The girl asked, a defensive glare on her face. Sophie internally rolled her eyes. God, why wouldn’t the girl just get over it and leave her alone to finish her croissant?
“There’s nothing wrong with you…” Sophie started.
“Just nothing right,” Piper Vermeer finished, grinning harshly up at the girl. Sophie bit her lip, knowing that Piper had just verbalized exactly what Sophie was thinking. She couldn’t have said it better herself.
The girl shrunk back, on the verge of tears.
“Please? I really need some extra money,” The girl pleaded, a fat alligator tear rolling down her rosy cheeks. Asia Laurent, who had been sitting silently in the background, gearing up for her witty remark, always said at the end of the confrontation for that last brutal blow, leaned forward and grinned. Sophie closed her eyes briefly, holding her breath. Asia’s remarks were always honest, always witty, but also could cause psychological damage to that person to last forever. Her remarks would always stick in the back of the victim’s mind, always there to cause the person doubt in anything they did. Half of Sophie admired Asia’s cruel wit, half of her was disgusted by it.
“I heard Budweiser was hiring beer girls for their new summer campaign,” Asia whispered, so that the girl had to lean in to hear her. The girl bit her lip and wiped her eyes, obviously hurt.
“Ex-excuse me?” The girl asked, tauntingly. Sophie raised her eyebrows, both amused by the girl’s bravery and appalled by her stupidity.
Asia seemed undaunted, however. She merely flashed an evil smile and winked at the girl.
“Or if that doesn’t work out, there’s always the corner. I heard you’re in art. You can make a hell of a good sign. You a whiz at math? I’ll help you. Ask for $50 bucks a pop and you’ll be set.”
That was low. Possibly the lowest blow Asia had ever gone for. It made Sophie sick when she saw the girl’s expression, that look of impossible shock and hurt. If anybody else had said that to her, she probably would have her in a headlock by now, but she had just gotten out-witted by Asia Laurent, and you just didn’t mess with that kind of nastiness.
The girl, however, bravely persevered.
“What did you just say to me?” She asked again, snot falling out of her nose faster than the water at Niagara Falls.
Asia widened her eyes slightly, shocked that the girl had persisted. Usually they dropped like flies after the first shot.
“You’re right. $50 a little high for you. I heard you’ll give it for free.” There were no such rumors, of course. Most of the people at the school actually viewed the girl as a prude, better fit on the Upper East Side than crazy TriBeCa. But it distressed the girl. That was what Asia wanted. Now because of that comment, that paranoia that there were rumors that she was a **** was embedded in her brain, and it never would be dropped.
Exactly! That's the point.
Wanot, dude, calm down. I'm sorry I didn't put "check out my FEMALE ONLY story". Do you realize how weird that would be? You're kind of anal about it. I'm a girl, but I know about the Boston Red Sox and the WWF.
And BTW, Cappaport Academy is the name of their school. I made it up.
I'm sorry to be so stuck on this, but Wotan, I don't like the fact that you put "I wouldn't have bothered to read it" like you're some kind of professional doing me a favor. Well, no offense, but I looked at your profil, and you've NEVER been published. Sorry, but I'm 14, and I've been published. You also give rude, uninformed answers to other people, as well. You seem to be arrogant and you think you know it all. You obviously do not, because if you did, you would be published by now.

I like it, the alliteration in the first sentence was very appealing, like something that might be said in a poetry slam. Good, though.

I do have to say, however, that one of you (cough BriBri endcough) seems to have an issue with it. To that I say,

Yeah. Was that necessary? No. Obnoxious? Yes. See my point?
Probably not. You're obviously too dim to get it.
And I believe I posted this in the wrong section. It was obvious by the unintelligent remarks.

This is a very good piece of writing. Some sections are worded a little oddly. Such as this exert:

"Sophie closed her eyes briefly, holding her breath. Asia’s remarks were always honest, always witty, but also could cause psychological damage to that person to last forever. Her remarks would always stick in the back of the victim’s mind, always there to cause the person doubt in anything they did."

This exert provides superfluous information and does not fit together with the flow of the story. Instead try something like…

Sophie closed her eyes briefly, holding her breath. Asia’s remarks were always honest, always witty, but often struck at an individuals deepest insecurities.

This revision acheives your desired result in a concise and effective manner. Assume you are writing to an intelligent audience, less is more. Over all, this is a strong passage. You are obviously still developing as a writer but have a bright future ahead of you. I hope that I have helped you.

If you had to pick one NHL player per show and place then onto the following who would you place on each show and why?

The Biggest Loser- I’d say Marty Brodeur that way if he lost even a couple pounds it would shut Avery up.
Fear Factor- Milan Lucic, I don’t think there’s much that guy fears.
Miami Ink- Ryan Malone, have you seen that guys tats?
What Not To Wear- Probably Sean Avery, the guy did an internship at Vogue over the summer, and wears man scarves which to me are a clear indicator of being either homosexual or a little bit too in touch with ones feminine side. (just my opinion)
Little People Big World- Zdeno Chara. AHAHAH how hilarious would that be?
Charm School- Steve Ott. He needs to improve his manners, for sure.

Fear Factor – Sam Gagner and Andrew Cogliano. During the summer, Dustin Penner dressed in all black and put on a SAW mask and went around scaring his teammates at night.
